This page has some pics of the people I work
with and the places that I do my magic in. I guess I should start
with my group, since they're the people I work with on a daily basis,
some more than others. We have an extremely large research group,
headed by Professor Stupp. He's a pretty famous person in the
nanotechnology and self-assembly world, acting as a chair member of the
President's Council for nanotechnology and other such positions.
In fact, we have over 30 undergrads, grads, and post-docs in the group.
As big as we are though, everyone's really nice, and we get to all
collaborate with each other and help out so it makes up for the lack of
personal contact with Professor Stupp. To make things run
smoother, we have sub-groups within our group. The largest group,
and the one I'm in, is the Biomaterials subgroup. Our subgroup
creates molecules to interact with cells, either as a carrier or a
coating on a substrate. There is also the Synthesis subgroup, who
develop novel molecules for the group as a whole, the Self-
Assembly subgroup, who develop inorganic molecules from self-assembled
organic templates, and the Devices subgroup, who combine physics with
materials science and chemistry to develop molecules for electronic
devices. If you'd like to learn more about the group, check out
the link on the MY NU
Page.
Next stop on the tour is where I actually do my work. On the
right I got a picture of my office, and the person I share it with,
Jena. She's pretty cool, always smiling and causing trouble, hence
the nickname. I also have a new office mate, Steve. He's one
of the new first years.
I also have some lab space where I can mix things and stir
things. Of course, with the privelage of lab space comes
responsibility, and upon arrival here I was given the duty of liquid
nitrogen supply guy. This means that I have to keep the 2 dewars
of N2 filled up for the whole lab. You wouldn't think this would
be so bad, but every week or so I have to push these things over to the
adjacent building to fill them up. Not so bad on the way there,
but filled they're 450 lbs., and the skyway between the buildings has a
fairly steep uphill slope in that direction. Needless to say I'm
staying in shape.
Well that's about it for the tour! Please let me know if
there's anything else you'd like to see/know.
